Cold Weather Golf: What Winter Really Costs You
By OverUnderWeather Research Desk
Cold air costs a few yards per shot, a cold ball adds to the loss, and the Rules won't let you heat it mid-round. Here's how big each effect is, plus five years of winter morning data at three public courses.
Quick answer
- Distance: about 1.5% less carry per 20°F colder from the air alone, or about 6 yards on a 200-yard shot at 30°F (Titleist).
- Ball: keep spares indoors before you play. Heating a ball during a round can mean disqualification (Rule 4.2a).
- Tee time: at our three public courses, winter air warmed most between early morning and midday.
Your winter yardage
Typical Dec–Feb air at 9am: 42°F. Estimated carry: 195.8 yd (−4.2 yd)
Five-year average for that hour (2021–2025, ERA5 model grid). Air effect only, calm conditions, Titleist rule of thumb.
Carry lost to cold air
Yards lost compared with 70°F, sea level, calm air. Titleist temperature rule; air effect only.
| Shot at 70°F | 60°F | 50°F | 40°F | 30°F |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 250 yd | −1.9 yd | −3.7 yd | −5.6 yd | −7.5 yd |
| 200 yd | −1.5 yd | −3 yd | −4.5 yd | −6 yd |
| 160 yd | −1.2 yd | −2.4 yd | −3.6 yd | −4.8 yd |
| 130 yd | −1 yd | −1.9 yd | −2.9 yd | −3.9 yd |
Cold air vs cold ball
These are separate problems. Cold air is denser, so every shot meets more drag. A cold ball is less lively off the clubface, which is why Titleist recommends keeping balls at room temperature. Andrew Rice's cold-weather testing for GOLF.com covers the combined effect on yardages. Bulky layers that restrict your turn can cost more on top, but we have not measured that ourselves.
Can you warm golf balls? What the Rules say
Rule 4.2a(2): a player must not make a stroke at a ball whose performance characteristics have been deliberately altered, "such as by scuffing or heating the ball." The penalty is disqualification (R&A Players' Rule Finder). GOLF.com's Rules Guy advises not keeping a ball in the same pocket as a hand warmer, and notes that whether the heating was deliberate may be debatable (GOLF.com). Warming your hands is fine.
Best winter tee time: how fast courses warm up
Average air temperature by local hour on December–February days, 2021–2025.
| Course | 6am | 8am | 10am | 12pm | 2pm | 4pm | Near peak from |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pebble Beach | 48°F | 49°F | 55°F | 58°F | 60°F | 59°F | 12pm |
| Bandon Dunes | 46°F | 46°F | 48°F | 51°F | 52°F | 51°F | 12pm |
| Chambers Bay | 42°F | 42°F | 43°F | 45°F | 46°F | 46°F | 12pm |
"Near peak" is the first hour within 1°C (about 2°F) of the warmest average hour.
Freezing mornings and cold, windy starts
Share of days, November–March. Freezing morning: air below 0°C (32°F) at any hour from 5am to 9am. Cold and windy 9am: below 10°C (50°F) with wind of at least 20 km/h (12 mph).
| Course | Nov | Dec | Jan | Feb | Mar |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pebble Beach | 0% · 0% | 0% · 0% | 0% · 0.6% | 0% · 1.4% | 0% · 0.6% |
| Bandon Dunes | 0% · 3.3% | 0% · 11% | 0.6% · 10.3% | 2.1% · 12.8% | 0% · 17.4% |
| Chambers Bay | 0% · 0.7% | 4.5% · 7.1% | 6.5% · 4.5% | 7.8% · 9.2% | 0% · 6.5% |
Each cell shows freezing mornings · cold, windy 9am starts. Pebble Beach: most cold, windy starts in Feb; Bandon Dunes: most cold, windy starts in Mar; Chambers Bay: most cold, windy starts in Feb.
Important limit: these are air temperatures at 2 m from a roughly 25 km weather-model grid, not grass temperatures. Frost can form on turf when the air is a few degrees above freezing, and coastal model cells can run milder than a sheltered fairway. So this undercounts frost delays. It is not a frost-delay forecast. Check the course's own policy on the day.
Cold at altitude
Thin air partly offsets cold air. By the Titleist rules, a 200-yard sea-level shot at 40°F carries about 195.5 yards at sea level, but about 209.6 yards at Castle Pines Golf Club (about 6,227 ft). See the highest-elevation PGA Tour courses and the golf ball distance calculator.
Layering without losing your turn
General guidance, not a tested gear review: a thin base layer, a mid-layer and a wind-resistant shell keep you warm with less bulk than one heavy coat. Winter gloves between shots and a warm hat help your comfort. We have not tested specific products.

Frequently asked
How much distance do you lose in cold weather golf?
By Titleist's rule of thumb, about 1.5% of carry per 20°F drop from cold air alone: about 3 yards on a 200-yard shot at 50°F and about 6 yards at 30°F. A cold ball and stiff, layered swings can cost more.
Can I warm my golf balls with a hand warmer?
Not during a round under the Rules of Golf. Rule 4.2a bans making a stroke with a ball whose performance has been deliberately altered, including by heating, with disqualification as the penalty. Keeping spare balls indoors before the round is a common workaround.
What is the best tee time for winter golf?
Usually late morning to early afternoon. At the three public courses we measured, average winter temperatures rose steadily from early morning and stayed close to their peak from about midday into mid-afternoon.
Is cold air or a cold ball the bigger problem?
Both cost distance in different ways. Cold air is denser, which adds drag on every shot. A cold ball is less lively off the face, which is why Titleist advises keeping balls at room temperature.
