How weather affects NFL games: wind, cold and totals by stadium
Wind is the most underpriced variable in NFL betting. This guide covers the thresholds that actually matter, how cold and precipitation interact with them, and which stadiums are weather-proof — then gives you the live read for every venue.
Live conditions and an AI weather lean for every NFL stadium.
Check today's NFL weatherWind is the number one factor
Passing and kicking are the two most weather-sensitive parts of football, and both degrade with wind. Deep throws lose accuracy first, then field goals from beyond 45 yards, then the intermediate passing game as offences adjust.
Rough working bands: under 10 mph, ignore it. 10-15 mph, a mild under nudge in pass-heavy matchups. 15-20 mph, kickers and deep shots are compromised. 20 mph+ sustained or heavy gusting is a genuine total-mover. Gust speed matters as much as the average, and swirling wind inside a bowl stadium can behave differently from the airport reading.
Cold weather and scoring
Cold-weather games are the ones everyone talks about, but temperature alone is a weaker signal than the wind that usually comes with it. Very cold air is denser, kicks travel a bit shorter, catching is harder, and ball handling suffers — modest effects that add up when they stack with wind.
The practical version: don't fade a total just because it's 25°F. Fade it when 25°F comes with 18 mph off the lake.
Domes vs open-air stadiums
Roughly a third of the league plays indoors or under a retractable roof — Detroit, Minnesota, New Orleans, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Indianapolis, Dallas, Houston, Arizona and the LA venues among them. In those games weather is simply not a variable, and any weather-based edge disappears.
The venues where conditions matter most are the open-air, exposed ones: Chicago, Buffalo, Cleveland, Green Bay, New England, Kansas City, Denver, the New Jersey stadium and Pittsburgh. Those are the games worth checking before you bet.
Rain, snow and field conditions
Steady rain pushes teams toward the run, shortens the passing game and increases fumble risk — all under-leaning. Snow is more variable: heavy snow suppresses scoring, but light snow in still air often plays close to normal and defenders can struggle with footing as much as receivers.
How OverUnderWeather reads it
Every NFL stadium gets live conditions from a professional forecast feed, a Weather Edge Score, and a plain-English Weather Lean — Over, Under or Neutral — with the reasoning spelled out. Domes are flagged so you don't waste time on them.

How much wind affects an NFL game?
Under about 10 mph, wind is mostly cosmetic. From 10-15 mph deep passing accuracy starts to suffer and long field goals get harder. Above 20 mph sustained, offences shorten their route trees and kickers lose meaningful range — this is where totals move most.
Does cold weather lower NFL scoring?
Cold on its own has a smaller effect than most people assume. Very cold games do trend slightly lower, but cold usually arrives with wind, and it is the wind that does most of the damage to passing and kicking.
Does rain or snow change the total?
Steady rain and heavy snow reduce passing efficiency, increase run rate and can cause ball-security issues, all of which lean under. Light drizzle in still air barely registers.
Are NFL games cancelled due to weather?
Almost never cancelled. Games are occasionally moved, rescheduled or delayed for lightning and severe storms, but the NFL plays through rain, snow and cold.
How long is a weather delay in the NFL?
Lightning delays run a minimum of 30 minutes from the last strike within an eight-mile radius, and reset with each new strike, so they frequently stretch past an hour.
