English Premier League wind and goals
Wind is blamed for scrappy English Premier League matches more than any other condition. We took every league match since 2010, matched it to archived kickoff-hour wind speed at the stadium's own coordinates, sorted matches into wind bands, and compared goals and Over 2.5 rates against calm matches from the same season — and against the bookmakers' closing odds. A dry-only cut separates wind from the rain that usually arrives with it. Whatever the data showed is what is published below.
The headline
Wind does not measurably move English Premier League scoring. Across 6,120 English Premier League matches from 2010-11 to 2026-27, the 1,628 matches that kicked off in 20–30 km/h of wind score -0.03 goals against calm matches from the same season (t = -0.52, well inside noise by our significance threshold). They went Over 2.5 goals 51.8% of the time against 54.2% in calm conditions and a market-implied 52.4% (z = -0.50 against the closing odds). The 79 matches in 40 km/h or more of wind score -0.12 goals against the calm control (t = -0.66) — short of significance, so directional evidence only. Stripping out rain, the 277 dry matches in 30 km/h or more of wind score -0.15 goals against the calm control (t = -1.36) — still short of significance, so wind alone is not carrying a scoring effect either. Wind speed carries a gradient of about -0.003 goals per km/h of wind — effectively flat.

The smaller figure in each cell is the gap with its test statistic: season-adjusted against the calm control in the goals and "vs calm" columns (t), and against the no-vig Over probability implied by that band's own closing odds in the last column (z). Roughly 2 is our threshold before a gap is treated as real; bands under 40 matches are greyed out, flagged, and quoted nowhere on this site. The dry-only row overlaps the strong and gale rows by design — it is the same matches with rain removed, not an extra band.
Season by season
Scoring drifts across eras, and so does how windy a season was, which is why every comparison above measures a match against its own season rather than the pooled sample. The windy-share column shows a gusty season cannot quietly drive the headline.

What actually holds up
- Windy matches score the same as calm ones. Across 1,628 matches in 20–30 km/h the season-adjusted gap is -0.03 goals (t = -0.52) — short of our significance threshold, so treated as noise. The breezy band (2,771 matches, 10–20 km/h) says the same: +0.06 goals, t = 1.03.
- Stronger wind does not change the answer. The strong band (450 matches, 30–40 km/h) sits at -0.03 goals (t = -0.31). The 79 matches in 40 km/h or more of wind score -0.12 goals against the calm control (t = -0.66) — short of significance, so directional evidence only.
- Rain is not hiding a wind effect. Stripping out rain, the 277 dry matches in 30 km/h or more of wind score -0.15 goals against the calm control (t = -1.36) — still short of significance, so wind alone is not carrying a scoring effect either.
- The market column keeps us honest. Matches in 20–30 km/h were priced at 52.4% to go Over 2.5 by the closing odds and actually went Over 51.8% of the time — a gap of -0.6 points, z = -0.50. That gap is short of significance: on this evidence the closing odds already carry whatever wind is worth in an English Premier League match.
Method and limits
- Sample: 6,120 English Premier League matches, 2010-11–2026-27, each with a final score and archived kickoff-hour weather at the stadium's own coordinates. English Premier League grounds are open-air, so no roof exclusions are needed.
- Venue mapping: matches are credited to the ground they were actually played at — Tottenham's Wembley seasons, West Ham's Upton Park years and Everton's Goodison Park years included.
- Weather: hourly ERA5 reanalysis 10 m wind speed at the stadium coordinates in the kickoff hour, in km/h. Reanalysis is archived model data, not an anemometer at the ground, and 10 m open-field wind is not pitch-level wind inside a bowl-shaped stadium — stands shelter the playing surface by an amount that differs ground to ground.
- Wind direction is not used. Unlike a kicking sport, a soccer pitch has goals at both ends and teams swap at half time, so wind relative to a fixed bearing has no clean interpretation here; we publish speed only rather than imply a direction finding we have not measured.
- Control group: under 10 km/h. Every figure is season-adjusted — each match against its own season's averages, for both goals and Over 2.5 rate.
- Odds: closing Over/Under 2.5 prices from the football-data.co.uk archive (market-average columns), de-vigged to an implied probability. 6,120 matches carry odds.
- The 40-match minimum and the significance threshold are house rules applied to every study before results are seen, not thresholds chosen to admit a row.
- Not controlled: team quality, tactics, refereeing eras, gustiness within the match, and pitch condition. Kickoff-hour wind is a proxy for the whole match.

That gap is short of significance: on this evidence the closing odds already carry whatever wind is worth in an English Premier League match. Because the soccer totals line is essentially always 2.5 goals, the market moves the price rather than the line, so the benchmark is the bookmakers’ own de-vigged closing odds.
Is it the wind, or the rain that comes with it?
Stripping out rain, the 277 dry matches in 30 km/h or more of wind score -0.15 goals against the calm control (t = -1.36) — still short of significance, so wind alone is not carrying a scoring effect either. That cut exists because strong wind in England usually arrives with rain, and a scoring effect credited to wind could really be rain. Reported separately so you can see which one, if either, is doing work.
Does the effect scale with wind speed?
Regressing season-adjusted goals on kickoff-hour wind speed across 6,120 matches gives a gradient of about -0.003 goals per km/h of wind — effectively flat. The band table is the more robust read, because a regression line can be pulled around by a handful of extreme matches.
How big is the sample?
6,120 English Premier League matches from 2010-11 to 2026-27, each matched to archived kickoff-hour wind at the stadium's own coordinates (sample average 17.5 km/h). 2,157 kicked off in 20 km/h or more, and 6,120 carry closing Over/Under 2.5 odds. Every ground used since 2010 is included, and clubs that moved stadiums are credited to the right one.
So should wind change how I read an English Premier League total?
On these numbers, no. Windy matches score within noise of calm matches from the same season, and the closing odds already sit where the results land. A finding we act on has to clear the 40-match minimum and the significance threshold, and has to show up against the closing odds — this one does neither.
