    Rain is the first thing anyone blames for a dull Premier League match. We took every league match since 2010, matched it to archived kickoff-hour rainfall at the stadium's own coordinates, sorted matches by how much rain actually fell, and compared goals and Over 2.5 rates against dry matches from the same season — and against the bookmakers' own closing odds. Whatever the data showed is what is published below.

    Rain does not measurably move Premier League scoring. Across 6,120 Premier League matches from 2010-11 to 2026-27, the 1,451 matches with any measurable kickoff-hour rain score +0.06 goals against dry matches from the same season (t = 1.15, well inside noise by our significance threshold). Wet matches went Over 2.5 goals 55.4% of the time against 53.3% for dry matches and a market-implied 53.3% (z = 1.61 against the closing odds). Only 37 matches had 2.5 mm or more of rain in the kickoff hour — under the 40-match minimum, so heavy rain is shown in the table but not quoted as a finding. Rainfall amount carries a gradient of about -0.04 goals per millimetre across wet matches — effectively flat.

    The smaller figure in each cell is the gap with its test statistic: season-adjusted against the dry control in the goals and "vs dry" columns (t), and against the no-vig Over probability implied by each band's own closing odds in the last column (z). Roughly 2 is our threshold before we treat a gap as real; bands under 40 matches are greyed out and flagged, and nothing in a flagged row is quoted anywhere on this site. If bookmakers fully price the weather, a band's actual Over rate should sit on top of its market-implied rate. The "any measurable rain" row pools trace, steady and heavy matches; most wet matches are barely wet.

    Season by season

    Scoring drifts across eras — the Premier League of the early 2010s is not the high-scoring league of recent seasons — which is exactly why every comparison above measures a match against its own season rather than against the pooled sample. The table also shows how much of each season was wet, so a rainy year cannot quietly drive the headline.

    What actually holds up

    • Wet matches score the same as dry ones. Across 1,451 wet matches the season-adjusted gap is +0.06 goals (t = 1.15) — short of our significance threshold, so treated as noise. The steady-rain band (691 matches, 0.25–2.5 mm) says the same: +0.07 goals, t = 0.97.
    • Heavy rain (37 matches) is below the 40-match minimum. Its Over 2.5 rate of 67.6% against a market-implied 51.6% (z = 1.96) is exactly the kind of row a minimum exists for. It is shown greyed out in the table, it carries no weight in anything on this site, and it will be re-read as the archive grows — the threshold was set before the numbers were seen, not adjusted to admit or exclude this row.
    • A trace of rain is not information. The under-0.25 mm band (723 matches) scores +0.05 against the control (t = 0.76). A damp pitch graphic tells you nothing about the total.
    • The market column keeps us honest. Wet matches were priced at 53.3% to go Over 2.5 by the closing odds and actually went Over 55.4% of the time — a gap of +2.1 points, z = 1.61. That gap is short of significance: on this evidence the closing odds already carry whatever rain is worth, which on the goals numbers is roughly nothing.

    Method and limits

    • Sample: 6,120 Premier League matches, 2010-112026-27, each with a final score and archived kickoff-hour weather at the stadium's own coordinates. 1,451 had measurable rain. Premier League grounds are open-air, so no roof exclusions are needed.
    • Venue mapping: matches are credited to the stadium they were actually played at — Tottenham's Wembley seasons, West Ham's Upton Park years and Everton's Goodison Park years included — not to the club's current ground.
    • Weather: hourly ERA5 reanalysis at the stadium coordinates in the kickoff hour. Reanalysis is archived model data, not a gauge reading at the ground, so small amounts carry more uncertainty than large ones.
    • Control group: no measurable rain. Every figure is season-adjusted — each match against its own season's averages, for both goals and Over 2.5 rate.
    • Odds: closing Over/Under 2.5 prices from the football-data.co.uk archive (market-average columns), de-vigged to an implied probability. The soccer totals line is essentially always 2.5 goals, so the market moves the price, not the line — the market column is the apples-to-apples benchmark. 6,120 matches carry odds.
    • The 40-match minimum and the significance threshold are house rules applied to every study before results are seen, not thresholds chosen to admit a row.
    • Not controlled: team quality, tactics, refereeing eras, wind arriving alongside the rain, and pitch drainage, which varies ground to ground.
    • Kickoff-hour rain is a proxy for conditions across the match; a match that started dry and turned wet in the second half reads as dry here.

    So should rain change how I read a Premier League total?

    On these numbers, no. Wet matches score within noise of dry matches from the same season, and the closing odds already sit where the results land. A finding we would act on has to clear the 40-match minimum and the significance threshold, and has to show up against the closing odds, not just against dry matches — this one does neither. Heavy rain is the one band left open, and only because it is still too small to judge.
