College football rain and totals
Rain is the first thing anyone mentions when a college football total drops. We matched every outdoor game in our archive that carries a closing total to game-window rainfall at the venue's own coordinates, sorted them by how much rain actually fell, and compared both total points and Over rate against dry games from the same seasons. The answer is a negative result, and we publish those the same way we publish the positive ones.
The headline
Across 2,704 outdoor games from 2016 to 2025 that carry a closing total, rain does not measurably move college football scoring. Wet games score 55.9 points against 56.7 for dry games — a season-adjusted gap of -0.9 with t = -0.87, which is noise. The Over rate leans very slightly lower in the wet (46.3% against 49.4%), but the margin against the closing total does not clear significance either. Rainfall amount adds nothing: the slope is about -1.6 points per millimetre.

The smaller figure in each cell is the season-adjusted gap against the dry control, with its t statistic. Anything under roughly 2 is noise, and every band here is under it. Bands under 40 games are greyed out and flagged: the heavy row's n=25 is far below the pre-existing minimum we apply to every study, so its 56.0% Over rate is not a finding and never appears in a headline or a lean. The "any measurable rain" row pools the trace, steady and heavy games so the wet side has a sample worth quoting.
Season by season
Scoring, closing totals and the share of wet games all drift year to year, and our odds coverage is not evenly spread across seasons either. That is why every comparison above measures a game against its own season rather than against the pooled sample.
The gaps in this table are odds coverage, not missing games. Our archive holds the results and game-window weather for every season below, but a game only enters this study if we also captured a closing total for it. Our historical odds backfill is still in progress and runs season by season, so 2024 contributes no games at all and some seasons contribute only a handful. Nothing is filtered out for what it showed — the missing rows are lines we have not backfilled yet, and this page will be updated as they land.

What actually holds up
- Rain is not a college football totals lever. Wet games sit -0.9 points from dry games on a season-adjusted basis across 391 games. That is as close to zero as this kind of study produces.
- A trace of rain is not information. The under-0.25 mm band (194 games) scores -0.4 against the control. A radar smudge at kickoff tells you nothing about the total.
- Steadier rain does not change the answer. The 0.25–2.5 mm band (172 games) comes in at -0.8 points with t = -0.52. Its Over rate of 45.9% is the most Under-leaning readable row in the study, and it still does not clear significance on the margin against the line.
- No amount gradient. About -1.6 points per millimetre — flat. This is the clearest contrast with our AFL rain work, where each millimetre does cost points.
- The market is not mispricing rain here. Wet games land -0.3 points from the closing total relative to dry games. If anything, the line already handles rain as well as our data can measure it.
Method and limits
- Sample: 2,704 outdoor college football games, 2016–2025, each with a final score, a closing total and game-window rainfall. 391 of them had measurable rain. Indoor venues and closed roofs are excluded entirely rather than used as a control.
- Weather: hourly reanalysis at the venue's own coordinates, read across the game window rather than off a single snapshot. Rainfall is archived model data, not a gauge reading at the stadium, so small amounts carry more uncertainty than large ones.
- Control group: no measurable rain. Every figure is season-adjusted — each game against its own season's average, for both points and margin against the closing total.
- Odds coverage is incomplete and unevenly distributed. Every season in the span has results and weather in our archive, but only games where we also captured a closing total qualify, and the historical odds backfill is still running. 2024 currently contributes no games at all, and seasons under 40 games are flagged in the table above and carry no weight in any claim. This is a coverage gap that will close, not a filter applied after seeing results, and the figures here will be restated as more lines land.
- Only 25 games reach 2.5 mm. Genuinely heavy college football rain is rare in a sample that also needs a closing line, so this study cannot say anything about downpours. It is a gap, not a null result.
- Not controlled: team quality, pace and pass-run balance, wind arriving alongside the rain, field surface, and snow, which reanalysis reports as precipitation rather than separately.
- This study reports Over/Under rates because closing totals are attached. Where they are not — our MLB and NFL wind work — we report points only.

Does rain lower scoring in college football?
Not measurably, on our data. Across 391 wet outdoor games with a closing total, season-adjusted scoring sits -0.9 points from the dry control of 2,313 games, with a t statistic of -0.87 — indistinguishable from no effect. Rain is not the totals lever that wind is in the NFL.
Do wet college games go Under the closing total more often?
Wet games hit the Over 46.3% of the time against 49.4% for dry games. That is a small lean in the Under direction, but the season-adjusted margin against the closing total is -0.3 points with t = -0.36 — well short of significance. We treat it as no edge rather than a small edge.
What about genuinely heavy rain?
Only 25 games in the sample carry 2.5 mm or more of game-window rain — far below the pre-existing 40-game minimum we apply to every band before quoting a number. The heavy row is shown for completeness only. It is not a finding, not directional evidence, and is excluded from our headlines, summary statistics and any pricing or lean use.
Does the effect scale with how much rain falls?
No. Regressing season-adjusted points on rainfall across the 391 wet games gives about -1.6 points per millimetre, which is effectively flat. There is no rainfall-amount gradient here of the kind AFL scoring shows.
Why is the sample smaller than your other college football studies?
Because this study needs a closing total as well as weather. Our weather archive covers thousands of college games, but only 2,704 of them have a closing total attached, from 2016 to 2025. We will not publish Over/Under rates on games without the line, so the totals work is limited to that subset.
So should rain change how I read a college football total?
On this evidence, no — not on its own. That is a useful result: it means a rain icon in the forecast is not a reason to expect fewer points in college football, and a market that has already moved the total down for rain has moved on something our data does not support. Wind and kicking accuracy remain the college football conditions that do show up.
