NFL stadiums: grass vs. turf
By OverUnderWeather Research Desk
A green field does not tell you what is under a player's feet. Some NFL grounds grow living grass, some reinforce it with synthetic fibres, and others use an entirely artificial surface. The roof is a separate question: an indoor stadium can still have real grass.

Which NFL stadiums have real grass?
The table covers 30 home stadiums for 32 teams: 16 living-grass fields and 14 artificial ones. SoFi and MetLife each host two teams. “Hybrid” means living grass with synthetic reinforcement, not an entirely artificial field.
Surface categories are cross-checked against Sporting News' September 16, 2026 breakdown. Individual sources below add team and manufacturer detail. These are published records, not an inspection of every field on October 28.

Grass, hybrid grass and artificial turf are different
Natural grass is a living plant grown in a root zone. A hybrid system adds synthetic reinforcement while retaining living grass as the playing surface. Artificial turf replaces the grass plant with manufactured fibres; its backing, infill and underlying construction are part of the field system.
That distinction matters when counting “real grass” stadiums. Lambeau's reinforced grass belongs in the living-grass column, not in the same category as an entirely synthetic field.
What rain and cold change
A surface label is not a game-day condition report. Living grass needs suitable growing conditions, drainage and maintenance. Cold, rain and wear can make that job harder; synthetic fields still need inspection and maintenance, even though there is no grass plant to keep growing.
The NFL's surface best-practice guidance treats the entire field system and its upkeep as important. This table does not establish that one category is always safer, drains faster, is more slippery or changes scoring by a fixed amount.
For the forecast itself, check this week's NFL weather; for what precipitation has meant in historical games, see our NFL rain guide.
Lambeau's heated field is still outdoors
The Packers describe more than 30 miles of heating pipe beneath the playing field. Their 2018 field reconstruction also describes a reinforced grass system. Heating the ground is not the same as heating the air: players, the ball and spectators still meet Green Bay's winter weather.
A roof does not mean artificial turf
Arizona and Las Vegas are the useful counterexamples. State Farm Stadium and Allegiant Stadium use movable living-grass fields that can be rolled outside. The grass gets outdoor growing conditions; the NFL game can take place under a roof.
The Cardinals describe their movable field tray, and Allegiant describes its retractable natural-turf field. See the NFL roof guide for the separate question of weather exposure.
Why a World Cup grass field is not an NFL conversion
A stadium can install a temporary soccer surface without making it the permanent NFL field. A World Cup photograph or soccer announcement is therefore not enough to reclassify its football surface. This guide counts NFL home fields, not temporary tournament overlays, international games or future venues that have not opened.
Sources and scope
Compiled by the OverUnderWeather Research Desk for the 2026 NFL season. Each stadium has its own source link. Product names are included only where the linked source supports them. Installation announcements are historical evidence, not a promise that no replacement has happened since.
Sources checked October 28, 2026. This is a venue reference guide, not a new injury or betting study, and it has not been reviewed by Kerry. The NFL's surface best-practice document supports the maintenance context; team pages support the heated-field and movable-tray examples.
