Why some courses are windier
The top of the list is dominated by island and coastal sites — Bermuda, the Georgia and Florida coast, South Carolina's Lowcountry — where nothing blocks wind off the water. Inland parkland courses lined with trees sit near the bottom. Links courses in Britain and Ireland are famous for wind, but each hosted only one Open in this window, so treat their figures as one week's weather.
What the wind costs
On windy courses, the tee-time draw matters more. Our PGA Tour wave study found the wave facing more wind scored about 1.5 strokes worse per player for every 10 mph of extra wind. For a different edge, see our ranking of the highest-elevation PGA Tour courses, where thinner air adds carry.
Method and limitations
- Rounds 1 and 2 of official PGA Tour events, 2021–2026, including no-cut events such as The Sentry and the TOUR Championship. The Zurich Classic (team) and WGC Match Play have no individual tee-time rounds in our source, so TPC Louisiana and Austin Country Club are not ranked; unofficial events (Hero World Challenge, team cups) are left out.
- Wind is modelled (Open-Meteo archive) at each course's coordinates, averaged over 5 hours from each player's tee-time hour. It is not measured on the course.
- "15+ mph rounds" is the share of player-rounds whose average wind was 15 mph or more.
- Courses with under 40 player-rounds are marked directional only.
- PGA Tour Q-School weeks (TPC Sawgrass' Dye's Valley Course and Sawgrass Country Club) are included because they are stroke-play events with rounds 1–2; those entries reflect Q-School weeks, not regular tour stops.
- Multi-course events (Pebble Beach Pro-Am, The American Express, RSM Classic, Q-School) use one weather point per week, so courses in the same rotation show near-identical wind by design.
- Course locations were checked one by one against OpenStreetMap on 23 October 2026; El Cardonal at Diamante is not mapped there, so its location is approximate.
- A course's event label is the most common event name in its records. Three weeks qualifies it for the repeated-venue table; this does not establish regular-tour status or year-round climate.
