Weather delays · Betting rules

What happens to your bet when weather stops the game?

The tarp comes out. Your moneyline, total and player prop are all on the same game—but they may not settle the same way. The important details are what you bet on, whether play started, and which house rules cover your ticket.

    Delayed is not cancelled

A pause alone is not an automatic refund. Check the restart or completion deadline.

    The market matters

An official baseball game can still leave a full-game total without action.

    Your state’s rules control

The same brand can publish different rules for different jurisdictions.

Scope matters. The comparisons below describe DraftKings’ West Virginia rule set, a FanDuel New York document with unconfirmed approval status, and BetMGM’s Massachusetts retail rules. They are not a verified nationwide mobile policy. This is a rules guide, not a determination of any individual bet.

First, work out what actually happened

“Rain delay” is a useful broadcast label, but not a complete settlement rule. Before looking for an innings count or an hourly deadline, identify the game’s status.

    Delayed
The start or restart is being held up. The game may still finish within the applicable window. Do not treat a pending ticket as a loss—or a promised refund.
    Postponed before it starts
No play has taken place and the game moves to a later date. Same-day start rules can void a baseball ticket even if the game is played tomorrow.
    Suspended after it starts
Play stops and is to resume from the same point. Restart and completion windows matter, and they are not necessarily measured from the stoppage.
    Called or declared final early
The governing body has an official result without a normal finish. Moneyline, full-game total and completed-period markets can have different requirements.

Next, open the exact market name and house rules in your account. A moneyline, first-five-innings total, live bet and Same Game Parlay are not interchangeable. Read any special ticket terms before applying a general rule.

MLB: five innings is not a rule for every bet

Baseball has two separate questions: is there an official game result, and has your market met its own completion requirement? That is why “the game is official” does not automatically mean your run line or total has action.

    5 / 4½

The usual official-game moneyline threshold in the documents read: five innings, or four and a half with the home team ahead. Other conditions still apply.

    9 / 8½

The normal full-game run-line and total requirement for a scheduled nine-inning game, with the home-leading exception and market-specific caveats.

Worked example, not a real ticket: a regular-season game is officially called after six complete innings, with the home team leading 4–2. A moneyline may qualify for settlement under the applicable official-result rules. A full-game run line has not reached nine or eight and a half innings. An over/under 8.5 has not been determined: six runs is not a winning under simply because play stopped.

If the score were 6–3, an over 8.5 could qualify under an already-determined-outcome exception where the rules allow it and the runs remain official. Do not apply that exception to every market—or assume it removes every other ticket condition.

For the league’s own rules rather than betting settlement, read our MLB rain-delay and suspended-game guide.

    DraftKings

    West Virginia rule set only

    Moneyline
Official game: 15 visiting outs with the home team ahead, or 15 home outs. Regular-season moneylines also require the game to be official and concluded within two local calendar days of the date it started.
    Run line / total
Normally 9 innings, or 8½ with the home team ahead; excludes moneylines and preserves unconditionally determined outcomes. Market-specific rules still apply.
    Interrupted regular season
Moneylines: two local calendar days from the date it started. Other markets: general 48-hours-from-last-play completion wording applies where not superseded. These are different clocks.
    Postseason
Interrupted postseason games have a 90-day provision measured from the date the game initially started.
    Official source

    FanDuel

NY document · approval status unconfirmed

    Moneyline
5 innings, or 4½ with the home team ahead. Ties and some mid-inning lead changes follow the suspension provision.
    Run line / total
Run lines: the 8½-innings rule (9 if the home team is not ahead). Totals follow that rule with an already-determined-outcome exception.
    Interrupted regular season
Resume within 48 hours of the originally scheduled start time. This is not 48 hours from the rain stoppage.
    Postseason
The document says bets stand if completed within 90 days of suspension.

    BetMGM

MGM Springfield · MA retail only

    Moneyline
5 innings, or 4½ with the home team ahead. A called game or suspension beyond 36 hours can use the last full inning, with a home-team bottom-half exception.
    Run line / total
9 innings, or 8½ with the home team ahead, for scheduled nine-inning run lines and totals.
    Interrupted regular season
Resume within 36 hours after the original start. Separate live-bet wording cancels undecided markets if play will not continue the same day.
    Postseason
Started postseason games stand until officially completed; that provision does not state a numerical deadline.
    Official source

Before first pitch: the DraftKings WV baseball rules and FanDuel NY document require a start on the scheduled local calendar day. The Springfield regular-season rules require the scheduled date and location. A suspended-game window is not permission to hold a game that never started.

    A 36-hour or 48-hour clock—starting when?

An hourly deadline without its starting point is only half an answer. The FanDuel NY document measures its 48-hour baseball resumption window from the originally scheduled start. Springfield measures its 36-hour window from the original start. Neither says “from whenever the rain arrived”.

Illustration: scheduled and actual start both Friday, 7 pm

    1. Friday, 9 pm: rain suspends play. The original-start clocks are already two hours in.
    2. Sunday, 7 am: 36 hours from Friday’s start—the Springfield regular-season resumption boundary.
    3. Sunday, 7 pm: 48 hours from Friday’s scheduled start—the FanDuel NY document’s boundary.

DraftKings WV is a different comparison: its regular-season moneyline rule uses two local calendar days from the date play started and requires an official, concluded game. Its general rules contain a 48-hour completion provision measured from last play for other markets where not superseded. Restarting and finishing are different conditions; calendar days and elapsed hours are different units.

Postseason games have separate provisions. In particular, do not assume a World Series suspension follows a regular-season deadline.

NFL and college football: do not assume a universal 55-minute rule

A lightning pause does not automatically void a football bet. If play resumes and the game finishes normally within the applicable rules, the interruption alone is not the deciding issue. A shortened or unfinished game needs a closer look.

    • BetMGM, MGM Springfield: the retail rulebook makes pro and college results official after 55 minutes of play and requires football games to be held within one week of the scheduled date at the scheduled venue. This is evidence for Springfield—not a verified rule for every BetMGM app.
    • DraftKings, West Virginia: its football interruption rules distinguish games with more than ten regulation minutes remaining from those with ten or fewer, and have separate postseason provisions. The text contains different 72-hour anchors: the original schedule in one clause and last play in another. We do not collapse those clauses into one simple deadline.
    • FanDuel, New York document: the American Football section contains 60-hour resume/reschedule wording with an NFL schedule reference, alongside a 24-hour clause referring to an undefined earlier time. That is not enough to give a reliable blanket minimum-play rule or a clean CFB deadline here.

For a football bet that has been graded after an interruption, ask support which state-specific clause, clock anchor and official statistics they used. A number copied from another sportsbook is not grounds to assume your ticket should settle the same way.

Our NFL weather-delay guide and college football weather-delay guide cover why play stops. Those safety protocols do not determine betting refunds.

Player props: “already happened” is not always “already settled”

There are three checks: did the player satisfy participation requirements, did the relevant period or game satisfy completion rules, and is the outcome already certain under a stated exception? One pitch, plate appearance or snap is not a universal guarantee that every unfinished prop stands.

A positive event may be determined

A recorded home run can make “to hit a home run” certain, subject to official statistics and the market’s rules. Likewise, a fully completed first inning has a different status from an unfinished full-game total.

An over is not always irreversible

DraftKings’ general rules use rushing yards as a caution: negative yards can reduce a player’s total. Crossing the line before a suspension does not necessarily make a rushing over unconditionally determined.

For MLB, DraftKings WV defines participation as at least one pitch for a pitcher or one plate appearance for a position player, but also has specific early-exit protections and exceptions for certain starting-player props. For Springfield football, one-snap participation has a quarterback-start exception. Always read the rule for the actual selection, not just the participation definition.

Live bets deserve their own check. Springfield’s live baseball wording cancels undecided markets if play will not continue the same day. Applying its general 36-hour restart rule to every live ticket would miss that exception.

Parlays: a void leg is not normally a losing leg

The ordinary parlay provisions read for DraftKings WV, the FanDuel NY document and MGM Springfield remove a void selection and recalculate the remaining wager. The other legs still have to win. A leg already graded as a loss is not erased simply because another game is postponed.

Illustrative $10 cash parlay · three legs originally priced at 1.91 each · assumes all surviving legs win
    What remainsCalculationTotal return
    One leg void; two win10 × 1.91 × 1.91$36.48
    Two legs void; one wins10 × 1.91$19.10
All three legs voidCash stake returned$10.00

Return includes the stake; it is not profit. Actual rounding may vary. This example excludes bonus bets, boosts, insurance and correlated pricing.

Same Game Parlays need their own rule

DraftKings WV explicitly preserves and reprices surviving SGP legs using odds available when the bet was placed; all void/push legs void the entire SGP. The FanDuel NY document says its void-leg treatment also applies to SGPs. We did not establish a separate Springfield SGP weather-settlement provision.

You cannot price the remaining legs of a correlated SGP by multiplying ordinary standalone odds. And a refunded bonus-bet stake need not behave like the cash example above.

If your ticket looks wrong, ask a specific question

    1. Keep your bet ID, placement time, full market name and any displayed special terms.
    2. Record whether the game never started, was suspended, or was officially called—and the original schedule and last-play time with timezone.
    3. Open the house rules for the state and platform where you placed the bet. Check the sport, live-market and postseason exceptions.
    4. Ask support: “Which rule and official result were used to grade this ticket, and when did the applicable deadline start?”

Cash out is a separate offer, not a weather-delay entitlement. Do not place a replacement bet on the assumption that the first one will be refunded.

Before placing a bet, check our MLB weather board, NFL weather board or college football forecasts. A forecast identifies possible disruption; it does not promise a cancellation, refund or betting edge.

    Official sources and verification limits

This is a primary-source comparison, not an original betting study. We read the rule text rather than treating older affiliate summaries as current policy. No independent reviewer is attributed to this guide.

DraftKings’ public pages served navigation shells; its official content service supplied the West Virginia text. FanDuel’s live online rules were access-blocked, and BetMGM’s New Jersey online endpoint did not expose readable rules. The official documents linked above do not establish a uniform nationwide mobile policy. FanDuel’s New York document is marked “When approved by NYSGC”; its effective status was not independently confirmed.
