How weather shapes college football games

College football is played in open-air stadiums from the Gulf Coast to the Rockies, so conditions vary far more than in the NFL. We track game-time wind, temperature, rain and altitude at every FBS venue and refresh the forecast through game day.

    • Wind: steady wind above 15 mph is the condition most likely to affect kicking and the passing game.
    • Lightning: NCAA policy suspends play for a strike within 8 miles, with a 30-minute clock that resets on every new strike.
    • Heat and altitude: early-season southern humidity and high venues such as Laramie and Boulder change how teams pace a game.

Our wind and kicking study of more than 4,000 college games found wind on its own did not move scoring much, so we present weather as context rather than a prediction.
